Buy Goods (Till) and Paybill charges
For standard retail, supermarket and restaurant 'Buy Goods' payments, the customer pays nothing. The merchant absorbs a small collection fee, which is typically around 0.55%.
Paybill payments are generally free for the customer, while the receiving business pays a collection charge based on its agreement with Safaricom.
- Buy Goods (retail Till): free for the paying customer.
- Fuel station Tills: some oil marketing companies pass the roughly 0.55% processing fee to the customer, capped at around KSh 200.
- Paybill: usually free for the customer.
Pochi la Biashara fees
Pochi la Biashara is a wallet for small businesses that separates business money from personal funds. Charges are simplified: amounts up to KSh 200 are free, KSh 201 to KSh 500 cost KSh 7, and larger amounts are charged about 0.55% capped at KSh 50.
M-PESA limits you should know
- Maximum per transaction: KSh 250,000.
- Maximum account balance: KSh 500,000.
- Daily transaction limit: KSh 500,000.
Good to know: Limits and tariffs are set by Safaricom and regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya. Confirm current rates before large transactions.
How to avoid unnecessary M-PESA fees
- When someone needs cash, send the amount plus the agent withdrawal fee so they receive the full amount you intended.
- Use Buy Goods (Till) or Paybill where accepted, since these are typically free for the payer.
- Keep transfers below KSh 20,000 per transaction where practical to stay on lower fee tiers.
- Business owners can use Pochi la Biashara to keep fees predictable and separate business income.
